How to Make Your Dog Smarter

Sometimes we forget that our furry friends are one of the smartest animal kinds in the nature – hence, they need to use their intelligence all the time to keep themselves in a great metal shape, otherwise they might get depressed same way as humans do. You can read here more about how to cheer your dog, but in this post I will explain how you can make your dog smarter and eventually prevent dog depression. The main goal is to challenge their minds with trainings, games, and exercises on a daily basis so they would stay in great cognitive fitness all the time. You can start working on that by following these easy 5 steps on a daily basis and you will see improvement in no time.

Let your dog get social with other dogs

Let your dog get social with other dogs –  go out more often to the dog gardens and playgrounds so that your dog could have a lot of interaction with other dogs. It will expose them to new situations and will make them think and make decisions more often. This is very important to stimulate their social skills and keep them in interaction with other dogs as this builds their personality which is a something we are lacking to develop while keeping them in human-only sphere.

Hide the toys and encourage your dog to find it

Hide toys around the house and let them go for a good search journey or you can put the toy in some visible place that will be hard to reach and let them get there. This way the dog will literally have to solve a problem improving its intelligence.

Use Smart Dog Toys

Use problem solving toys like flip boards or smart food jars to stimulate your dog intelligence and make it smarter. You can also make DIY problem solving toys – you can put food inside a plastic bottle and let the dog understand how to extract the food out of it. This kind of toys will encourage the dog to act smart and develop better senses.

Alter the walking routes you use to walk with your dog

Switch the walking routes you use when you walk your dog to stimulate its senses and intelligence – it will expose your dog to new sights, smells and sounds and will challenge their minds. For start It’s enough to walk the same route but in different direction to show them the same things from a different point of view, to improve that – just use different walking routes every day.

Teach your dog to make eye contact

Teach your dog to make eye contact if it doesn’t happen already – you can take a treat and hold it between your eyes for some time until you see that the dog starts to focus on you eyes. From that point  you can start making some gestures with your eyes and eyebrows and see how the dog reacts. Practicing this will improve the connection between you and your dog and the ability to communicate better.

The sooner you start practicing these things the sooner you will start seeing progress ant your dog will start getting smarter. These exercises can be practiced with puppies or mature dogs – they all need cognitive stimulation all the time and at every age. This will always encourage your dogs to keep their curiosity and intelligence at a high level.
